Cans Festival, Leake Street London

Cans Festival, Leake Street London

When I lived in the UK I was not really one for domestic party politics due a mistrust of politicians. I also failed to see any major differences between the parties when in power. The daily reporting on political debates and issues was a press scrum directed by egos and spin doctors with little baring on reality. It was just a noisy din. Were our MPs really getting things done and solving issues? Were they really at work, solving the countries problems or just cavorting in this whole noisy charade?

Living in the United States at this point in time I’ve found my interest piqued by domestic politics. I believe – and hope – I will witness an historical time in US politics after two terms of Bush and the hopeful dawning of a new era when (if) Obama wins. It’s fascinating to watch and learn about the US political system – which really is government by media.

The most amusing twist was McCain choosing Senator Sarah Palin as his pick for Vice President. McCain, who I’ve learnt was a more liberal Conservative, picks a woman who seems like Bush in drag. Pro-choice, pro-death penalty (how medieval), pro-drilling more oil, ultra Christian and anti-sex education in school (which I’m assuming is why her 18 year old daughter is currently pregnant).

I hope Americans feel their intelligence insulted by this choice on behalf of McCain. It was a transparent stunt to appease the more right wing Republicans and at the same time win the female vote now that Clinton was out of the running. Matters are made worse when you see interviews with Palin who is clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed. She only recently received her passport and her previous job was Major of Wasilla, Alaska, population 7,000. It’s like a terrible horror story that this character is within reach of being the VP of the worlds Superpower. Indeed, given McCain’s age she could concievably be President of the United States if he croaked it. How could a person with such limited experience get here? How can the American nation think that this lady is qualified for the job? What messages does it send out to the rest of the world?

It’s scary stuff. The next few months are going to be fascinating and I hope the American public does the right thing and votes the Republican’s out. The rest of the world expects it.
